Expert advice: How to prepare your business for automation with Forrester’s RQ

For businesses to navigate the ever-changing future of work and succeed with automation, human employees must work successfully alongside robots and new technology. But preparing to transform your organisation is a tricky business.

As they say, if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. Preparation is particularly important for automation considering the current obstacles businesses are facing. While 2018 was hailed as the year of RPA adoption, Deloitte’s latest report shows little year-on-year growth from 2017 findings where only three per cent of respondents had achieved substantial scale with RPA projects. Process fragmentation was cited as one of the biggest barriers. Capgemini’s report ‘Reshaping the future: unlocking automation’s untapped value’ (October 2018) also found that only 16% of businesses surveyed had deployed multiple use cases at scale.

Raising RPA out of silos to achieve business-wide scale is essential to automation success. And for this to happen businesses need to prepare.

Analyst firm Forrester has been studying what makes a business ready for automation. As a result, it’s developed a new framework and assessment tool to help organisations assess, and then put a plan in place to improve, their readiness for the new world of work.

As Forrester VP and principal analyst J.P. Gownder writes (in a report titled ‘RQ: Assess your readiness for working side by side with robots and AI’), to overcome such obstacles to automation and artificial intelligence: “Technological prowess isn’t enough to succeed in automation. [...] Driving business results requires upgrading a wide variety of competencies within your organisation.”

Introducing RQ

We think Forrester’s Robotic Quotient (RQ) is the Mensa of automation. It measures the competencies, culture and organisational structures that are key to improving organisations’ acceleration of automation adoption. The higher your business’s RQ, the more likely to be successful.

RQ, as defined by Forrester “measures the ability of individuals and organisations to learn from, adapt to, collaborate with, trust and generate business results from automated entities, including software like RPA, AI, physical robotics and related systems”.

The Forrester report states that “adding people, leadership, and organization together and then multiplying them by the technology challenge multiplier gives you a better sense of what improvements you need to make to succeed with your automation technology plans”.

Report author J.P. Gownder writes: “High RQ will drive competitive differentiation and top-line revenue. [...] As automation, AI, and robotics become pervasive and critical business tools, only high RQ companies will succeed.”
